Out of nervousness as a child, I used to pick at the skin around my fingernails. What began as mental anxiety eventually turned into play, but looking back, that 0.3mm layer represents the entirety of the visual prejudices through which modern society views people. Upon this thin shell, free of blood vessels and nerves, rest the heavy preconceptions of race, gender, age, and appearance. This is not limited to humans. A plant’s cuticle protecting its moisture, or a coastline where land meets water, are ultimately just outer shells, or skins, of living beings and nature.
In any case, the visible surface tells us nothing about the true essence breathing beneath it. Because once the visual shell is stripped away, a unique inner temperature exists, completely distinct from the shallow prejudices that deceive our eyes.
A thermal camera penetrates that rigid layer of prejudice. By reading invisible infrared rather than visible light, the lens dissolves the visual categories defined by the world, returning only the ambiguous, implicit 'temperature' of a living being as a single mass.
I paint the temperature that the camera leaves behind. Painted with my full senses and at my own pace, the blindingly hot sand, the cool, crashing blue waves, the people who have reached me, and the memories of places I have walked do not stay in separate compartments. They condense into a single essence.
Exploring images with blurred outward forms, I load multiple colors of oil pastel and acrylic onto a single stroke and do not repaint. Where the stroke passes, external contours are erased, and the inner warmth encountered in that moment remains as a vivid vibration. A temperature is not something you can repaint.
In my canvas, colors are not merely feelings. They are the unique temperatures that remain after all prejudices have been erased.
